Healthcare Shifts in Cybersecurity

Published by Cisco Global

Prior to 2020, chances are you did not meet with your doctor virtually — as telehealth was not widely adopted. Like so many other things, the Covid pandemic disrupted healthcare. No one could have predicted the rapid changes and accelerated path to digital transformation that Covid would have on our already strained healthcare system. In a matter of months, not decades, the medical community would shrink in the standard day-to-day operations and expand into hyper-focused Covid triage and remote options.

Organizations grappled with new healthcare delivery methods, interrupted medical treatments, disruption of the supply chain, decreased immunization rates and trips to the ER that were not Covid-related. This resulted in delayed elective procedures, increased virtual visits, interrupted clinical research, a shortage of healthcare workers, worker burnout, high exposure to Covid, limited access to women’s health and a surge in out-of-hospital local Covid care. Telemedicine moved into the mainstream and many jobs went remote. A FAIR Health review of 2020 insurance claims showed a 3,060% increase in telemedicine claims over 2019 claims.
